Boarding School: limits and paradoxes of a total institution

Abstract:

The boarding school is a mode of schooling that provides housing and meals. In this type of educational facility, time is extended when comprising what is usually separated: survival, work and leisure. This characteristic leads Goffman to consider it as a total institution. The time extension of this influence and the intense collective life produced by it allow the development of strong personal and emotional relationships on one hand and, ont eh other one, certain hidden provisions and practices that limit the ascendancy of this institution.
