RURAL EDUCATION IN SPAIN IN THE 1950s: UNESCO AND THE EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES OF THE FRANCO REGIME

ABSTRACT:

This paper is the result of an investigation about rural education in Spain with the goal of verifying the influences of UNESCO in the educational policy of the Franco government during the 1950s. The research was carried out in Spain in 2013 by analyzing primary documentary sources in magazines of National Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information and Tourism and in the publications of UNESCO from 1953 to 1956, in which were gathered issues related to international organizations and rural educations. Secondary sources were used to obtain data from Spanish history and rural education. We identified different periods in a process of approximation of Spanish educational guidelines to the precepts of Unesco, particularly with mediation of the Catholic Church and the Spanish Falange, the political party of the Franco regime.
