BROTHERHOODS AND EDUCABILITY: A LOOK AT THE BLACK ASSOCIATIVE ARRANGEMENTS IN PERNAMBUCO IN THE XIX CENTURY'S FIRST HALF

ABSTRACT:

The paper discusses practices and black sociability expressions in Pernambuco Province in the first half of the nineteenth century, understanding them as educational institutions created by the black population. Therefore, we did a documentary research to identify some forms of social organization, analyzing their political capacity and educational importance. Among these associative arrangements, we observed the role of some black fraternities of the Province in constructing "autonomous" alternatives of social and political life facing the slaving reality. The educational factor is a fundamental dimension of associative dynamics, allowing the sharing of values and knowledge among its members. So, these organizations are constituted as instances of educability and identity affirmation for the population of Africans and black people born in Brazil.
