O valor estatístico de uma vida: estimativas para o Brasil

Abstract

This paper seeks to estimate the compensatory differentials received by Brazilian workers using an individual data panel constructed from the Annual Social Information Register (RAIS) in the period 2012-2015. To this end, firstly, variables related to the rates of occupational accidents (fatal, injury and illness) are constructed for the subclasses of the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE) and the function of hedonic wages for different samples of separated workers is estimated by gender and degree of risk of occupation together with the calculation of the Value of a Statistical Life (VSL), illness and injury for each sample. The results show that for men in general, VSL is R$ 2.442 million, while for blue-collars men this is R$ 1.119 million. For women in general, the VSL is R$ 1,088 million, but for blue collar women the results obtained do not allow inferences about. In addition, the average VSL calculated for Brazil is well below that obtained for most countries, including developing countries.
