The imagined city: stories and experiences from Macapá in the first years of the federal territory of Amapá

ABSTRACT

The present article, based on testimonies of people who lived in Macapá during the validity of the Federal Territory of Amapá (1943-1988), aims to bring to light a history that can highlight other memories about this city. To do so, we explored a set of testimonies that were collected between 2011 and 2013, via the project Salvando memórias sociais sobre a cidade de Macapá (1944 a 1988). They all have in common a long lived experience in a city affected by almost fifty years under the jurisdiction of the Union. Through the memories of these people, other plots, versions, significances and meanings were linked to the transformation process Macapá went through after 1943, leading to a critical reflection on that period, which goes in the opposite direction to the one established by the hegemonic discourse.
