The scientific development of the Federal Institutes: growth and representativeness in the national scientific production in journals indexed in the Web of Science (1970-2020)

Abstract

It aims to understand the contribution of the Federal System of Professional, Scientific and Technological Education to the development of Brazilian scientific research. For this, a scientometric study was carried out on data from scientific publications retrieved from the main collection of the Web of Science, generating indicators of scientific production. To enhance the analyses, information was also collected on the Nilo Peçanha platform and the Sucupira platform. It was possible to verify that, after the implementation of the Federal Institutes, there was a significant growth in the number of scientific articles published by the Federal System, with the Instituto Federal Goiano standing out and, among the Brazilian regions, the Southeast, in relation to the number of publications. As for the research areas, the one that obtained the highest number of published documents was Agriculture, with the area of Education and Educational Research also being identified among those that obtained the most publications. It is concluded that the Federal Institutes created in 2008 brought an important increase to Brazilian scientific research.
