Physical Education in High School of Youth and Adult Education: pedagogical (im) possibilities about the body

Abstract

The study aimed to understand the perceptions of students of Youth and Adult Education about the body and how the Physical Education contemplates the pedagogical approaches on the theme. The empirical material consisted of observations and semi-structured interviews with 13 high school students of Youth and Adult Education at a state school located in the west of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was found that the students perceive the importance of taking care of themselves, however the lack of time and the limited financial resources compromise the concern with their own bodies. In addition, it was possible to identify a lack of debates related to the body in Physical Education classes. High school students in Youth and Adult Education at this school appeared not to have been stimulated to think about body-related issues so far. Themes related to the body seem distant from the daily reality of these students. Such data contribute not only to (re) think the particularity of pedagogical intervention in Physical Education, but also reveal the extent to which the socio-cultural context crosses issues related to the body, which can guide the teaching profession of this and other disciplines in this modality of education.
