USINA: ARTICULATIONS BETWEEN TEACHING AND LITERATURE, AND ALSO INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

ABSTRACT:

This paper presents an analysis of the literary work Usina by the Brazilian author José Lins do Rego. This analysis aims to identify this book’s potentiality for approaches of interactions among Science, Technology and Society (STS) in the teaching of natural sciences. The book was submitted to a Discursive Textual Analysis (DTA) procedure. The analysis was organized from three categories raised a priori and one emergent: The salvationist vision of science and technology and its contradiction; technological determinism; technocracy, and the relation between culture and technology. Among the results we highlight that the book Usina can collaborate to: problematize myths related to scientific and technological development, favouring the questioning between optimism and pessimism related to it; promote debates about the decision making concerning technology and its impacts; discuss how scientific and technological development influence cultures.
