Being a drag queen: a study on the characterization of the queer identity

The main objective of this study was to identify the formation process of queer identity of some drag queens in the cities of Balneário Camboriú and Florianópolis, in the state of Santa Catarina, south of Brazil. In order to achieve this objective, we investigated how the drag queens identify themselves with the female and male genders. In addition, we investigated how the relation between the interviewed subjects and their drag queen character gets established through their description of their own sexuality. The data was collected from three subjects through a survey composed of a semi-direct questionnaire and through visits to their homes and to the nightclubs where they perform their shows. The interviewed subjects have reported that their drag queen character identity differs from their own personal identities in several ways. Besides their posture and attitudes, drag queens have physical and psychological characteristics that are proper to their character's identity and which are distinguishable from their own personal identity. However, there were frequent reports of some situations in which both identities are blended. Through the results, one can identify how the configuration of identity is related with socialization and body changes. The subjects who enact the role of drag queens manifest their identities, of both genders, by configuring what one may call a queer identity.
