When children teach us about the city

ABSTRACT

This paper, in essay format, aims to examine school as a privileged locus of education and as reference of a suitable presence of children in the city. As source of inspiration, it takes observations arisen from an ongoing ethnographic study performed with children in Early Childhood Education in a working class neighborhood in the city of Vitória (state of Espírito Santo, Brazil). In different contexts to the research field and simultaneous to the process of investigation, it identifies peculiar forms of children mobilize meetings and solidarities, leaving a glimpse of gestures, attitudes, and other senses that surpass the prominence of individualism and indifference still existing in the city. Children’s experiences are interpreted here as an important and necessary reading key to challenge the school to escape the totalization of its knowledge and of the place it occupies in the social hierarchy.
