In Brazil, studies on sociology institutionalization have focused on central cases as those of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and their diff erences. However, the patern of sociology institutionalization varied according to regions. In these contexts, precursors were elite representatives who defined and reproduced the social set of problems considered legitimate. This Brazilian peripheral logic of sociology had an emblematic case in Rio Grande do Sul since the UFRGS's Chair of Sociology is named afer a representative of the catholic generation: Laudelino Medeiros. Thus, this paper shows how Medeiros redefined his dominant catholic sets of reference for the sociology he taught. To do so, he relied on various sources among which he privileged those referent to the methodology raised from school culture.
