Socio-historical schooling in the mapuche context: educational, social and cultural implications in an intercultural perspective

ABSTRACT:

This article seeks to problematize the Eurocentric monocultural schooling and its implications in the process of minorization of the mapuche by the Chilean State. Through a literary review, evangelization, missionary schools and public education are analyzed as models of schooling in the mapuche context. These have been based on western eurocentric monoculturalism and colonialism, being used as a device of power to dominate the mapuche. Although nowadays intercultural education programs are evident, they are functional to the State, without abandoning monoculturalism. Therefore, there is a need to move towards schooling in an intercultural perspective to reverse the damage caused by monoculturalism.
