Social inclusion and segmentation in public Higher Education in the State of São Paulo, Brazil (1990-2012)

What are the consequences of expansion and affirmative action for social inclusion in Brazilian public universities? The analysis of the social characteristics of the 2012 freshman in four universities in the state of Sao Paulo - USP, Unicamp, Unifesp, UFABC - shows that they received a substantial number of high school graduates coming from less privileged background. The institutional model of the expansion directed these students to the less prestigious majors, reinforcing the already high internal segmentation. UFABC appears to be an exception. It received a greater number of high school graduates from higher income families whose parents did not finish higher education and it seemed to have postponed social segmentation by adopting the Integrated Bachelor's majors.
