The idiot, the expert, and the diplomat: reflections on cosmopolitanism and the practice of human formation

ABSTRACT:

Cosmopolitanism emerges in modernity as a project of a highly ethnocentric and imperialist culture: should we, however, abandon any expectation of constructing a policy of harmonious relations between different peoples, cultures, countries and ways of being that coexist in our world? The present article aims to discuss some of the terms and conditions in which a cosmopolitan education can be presented as a response to the different challenges of contemporary times, based on the cosmopolitical proposal presented by Isabelle Stengers notably in the texts “La proposition cosmopolitique” (STENGERS, 2007STENGERS, I. La proposition cosmopolitique. In: LOLIVE, J.; SOUBEYRAN, O. (orgs.). L’émergence des cosmopolitiques. Paris: La Découverte , 2007. p. 45-68.) and “Pour en finir avec la tolérance” (STENGERS, 1997STENGERS, I. Pour en finir avec la tolérance. Cosmopolitiques VII. Paris: La Découverte/Les Empêcheurs de Penser en Rond, 1997.).
