Multigenerational families and their personages

Based on the results of four surveys conducted during the past 10 years, in Bahia, this paper explores two basic generations of contemporary multigenerational families: the very old, who are increasingly becoming centenarians, and the pivot generation, constituted by their children, who also grow older. Besides being caregivers for the former, the latter frequently support their own children and grandchildren. We thus consider the duplicity of the generational roles as gender-oriented and take into account the impact of social changes on the resocialization process of the "young old" who, after new experiences such as leisure groups or return to the labor market, are trying to play new social roles.
