Intergenerational exchanges and boundary construction in the educative experiences of the middle classes

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the educative strategies and experiences of four middle and intermediary class families in the Paris Region. Such study highlighted several continuities and differences between the education received from the parents and that given to the children. Examples are the various degree of adhesion to the familism ideology and the effects of the progressive autonomization of both the educational field and the delegation of parents' authority. The relationships that used to link family and school education to the values that guaranteed a successful mobility to families participate in the constitution of family and educative "vocations". On the one hand, the changes observed concern the transformation of the role of women in the family memory handling, the transmissions of the family heritage and the construction of genealogies. On the other, they refer to the educative styles, with the decline of authoritative behaviors and their transformation into moral obligations. Such changes have been strengthening the role of families in the production of ethical boundaries within the social space, in the intergenerational exchanges an in the mobility perspectives.
