Generation of Medical Waste in hospitals in the city of Ribeirão Preto (SP), Brazil

ABSTRACT

This research aimed to identify the generation of healthcare waste in hospitals in the city of Ribeirão Preto (SP). This is a descriptive and exploratory study conducted in 11 hospitals in the city. Data were collected through of the weighing of the MW and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data collection was initiated after approval of hospitals and approval by the of Ethics Committee Research of the EERP/USP. The 11 hospitals included in the study had a generation of 44,489.91 kg of healthcare waste at 6 days, with a daily average of 7,414.98 kg.day-1. The data obtained revealed a generation of 29,846.08 kg (67.1%) of common residues (Group D); and 11,236.69 kg (25.3%) of infectious waste and sharps (Groups A and E). This study reinforces the need for adequate healthcare waste management for the reduction of generation in any situation, especially in hospitals.
