PHOTODECOMPOSITION AND PROTECTION OF TROPICAL WOODS

ABSTRACT

This study compares the photodegradation processes of five tropical woods submitted to simulated weathering under the action of ultraviolet radiation plus water together and only in the presence of the ultraviolet radiation. It was also examined the protection effect of a poliuretanic varnish and a stain under the more danous condition. The degradation processes were monitored by spectrocolorimetry. Angelim vermelho and ipê-amarelo were the most resistant woods to weathering, followed by garapeira and jatobá, in this order. The two finishing products tested did not impede the occurence of the total variation color of woods surfaces but both caused retardation of the process.
