Importance of long term monitoring in the study of biodiversity: example of hydroids fauna (Cnidaria) of Espirito Santo bay

Abstract

The biota was sampled and observed over a long period, on two rocky shores at Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil: one at Camburi (1986-1995), in order to monitoring the recovery of the area after the CVRD constructed new settling ponds for collect iron fines; and another at Praia Mole (1991-1995), after part of the CVRD effluents were moved to this location. A total of 51 species of hydroids were found: 42 at Camburi and 33 at Praia Mole. For several species, new records were established, and their known distribution along the coast was extended. One new species was found.
