SUMMARY

In the Ria de Janeiro State there are several kinds of conservation units. Distributed among parks, ecological reserves, watershed protective forests and so on, there are 109 under federal, state or municipal govern management. The conservation units are concentred in the Rio de Janeiro micro-region covering a area superior to 180 thousands hectares representing 33% of the whole state preserved area. The total preserved area in the state it is 572. 766 hectares. The conservation unit creation evolution it is very interesting because in 1972 almost one third of the units were already created. From 1973 to 1982 the creation was slow having just a average growth of one unit each year. From 1 983 to the end of 1 990 the average raised overpassing 7 new units a year. In the year of 1991 just one unit was established and in 1992 no unit was created.
