Genetic evaluation of leucaena leucocephala [(lam.) De Wit progenies in indigenous reserve, in Caarapó city, MS

Abstract

The present research had as objective to estimate genetic parameters and evaluate the performance of Leucena leucocephala [(Lam.) De Wit] progenies, aiming the selection of the best genetic material to be used in several production system. Thirty progenies were planted in a trial at the Kaiowá and Guarani Indigenous Reserve, in Caarapó, MS, Brazil, following the randomized block design, with five replications and ten plants per plot. At the age of thirteen months after the planting, the total height and diameter of the plants were evaluated. The results showed low genetic variability for the studied traits, suggesting that the progenies can be originated from few inbred lines. The estimates of the individual heritability coefficients were low (3,38% to 5,13%). The heritabilities of progeny presented moderate magnitudes and can provide considerable genetic progress from selection. The results provided the identification of the best four progenies or inbred lines. However, it is necessary to enhance the genetic base of the material for the long term improvement program.
