In the science’s kitchen: the uses of epistemology concept in communication research

Abstract

Twenty years ago the first book about communication epistemology was published in Brazil, organized by Lopes (2003). The following decades were marked by an unprecedented increase in research on the subject, generating a growing number of publications and events on it, such as those by L. C. Martino (2017), Signates (2018) and Rüdiger (2022). This text outlines, based on bibliographic research, the uses of the concept of communication epistemology in this period, from the initial discussions to its unfolding into an established body of knowledge. Observation of this movement suggests a lack of consensus on the concept, but points to efforts to construct it in dialogue with perspectives that go beyond classical epistemology and dialogue with non-hegemonic proposals. We discuss, from then on, some promises and limits of the trails traveled in these two decades.
