Model for Environmental Assessment in Industrial Production Systems: a case study in a company that manufactures metallic structures

Production systems improvements result from the application of specific methods and techniques. However, for a long time, these tools focused only on quality and productivity goals. Due to the growing importance of environmental issues for society, some models for assessing environmental impacts have been developed. Nevertheless, their structure is very complex and inadequate for micro and small enterprises. Therefore, the objective of this work is to present the Model for Environmental Assessment in Industrial Production Systems, a tool created to analyze micro and small enterprises from the environmental perspective. The model can be implemented within a short time period, at low cost and scientific integrity. The tool was applied to identify the environmental impacts of a metal-mechanic sector company that manufactures metallic structures. As a result, it can be said that the gas emissions from surface coating operations such as polishing and painting were the major environmental problems associated to the production process.
