Yied of the lettuce and radish as a function of the time of establishment of the intercropping

The yield and quality of radish and lettuce were evaluated, taking into account the time of establishment of the intercropping. The experiment was carried out in the UNESP, Jaboticabal (Brazil). The treatments were made up of intercropping established at 0; 7, and 14 days after transplanting (DAT) of the lettuce and monocultures established in these same dates. The radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars were Crimson Gigante and Carolina, respectively. Taller radish plants were observed when intercropped with lettuce. Regardless of the sowing dates, radish plants in monoculture accumulated 29.4% less dry matter of the aerial part (DMAP) than in intercropping system. For dry matter of tuber roots, higher accumulation was obtained when intercropped with lettuce, regardless of the time of installation of the intercropping. Larger accumulation of lettuce DMAP was measured in intercropping system, when sowing of the radish was accomplished up to 7 DAT. Besides smaller accumulation of DMAP, when the sowing date of the radish was accomplished 14 DAT, there was a reduction in lettuce quality. The largest value in relation to the equivalent area (1.6) in the intercropping system was obtained for the radish sowed 7 days after the lettuce.
