HISTORY OF EDUCATION IN LATIN AMERICA: CONTRIBUTION AND INPUTS OF THE SOCIETY OF THE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICAN EDUCATION - SHELA (1994-2015)

Abstract

This text is based on the findings of research on the history of Latin American education from the perspective of an international academic network, which centres its work in the Society for the History of Latin American Education (Shela, 1994). From premises to conclusions, this research expresses the explicit aim of moving towards an understanding of the discipline in times of transdisciplinarity. We considered it important to highlight the construction of Shela's intellectual field by showing the results of the research linked to local, regional, national and international networks and the impact they have had in each country. It was found that in its international activity, Shela has been providing theoretical, methodological and strategic elements in order to develop a new historiographical perspective for education in Latin America and the Caribbean. Renewed methodological categories and hitherto invisible topics have been incorporated into traditional historiography, in the new Latin American contexts. The method is focused on the social history of education, dabbling in mentalities, with comparative methodology that has been internalized in Shela's research work. The sources are established from Shela's archive, research groups and interviews.
