“French Protection”: the luso-brazilian press in the defense of the Portuguese Empire (1808-1811)

ABSTRACT

The present article aims to analyze political pamphlets and newspaper articles published in Portugal and Rio de Janeiro during the period of French occupation of the Kingdom (between 1808 and 1811), highlighting how these two types of publications used a very similar language, despite of the difference of their nature. Characterizing themselves as works intended to combat the French and to incite the Portuguese resistance to the invaders. The article seeks to point the important role assumed by the press as a political agent in the defense of the Kingdom against the invaders, by its insertion in a typical political way of the societies of Old Regime. By its insertion in a typical political way of the societies of Old Regime in which the idea of neutrality of the press was just a rhetorical device that had the objective of guaranteeing its credibility with the reading public.
