Printed negotiations: the trade press and the working class leisure in Rio de Janeiro of the First Republic

ABSTRACT

Traditional sources for History, newspapers have been, since the 1980s, neglected for social historians interested in understanding the universe of the working class. Because of the denial of a valuable self-image built by the journalists during the twentieth century, the press came to be seen by many historians as a pedagogical discourse that tried to control and discipline the workers and their practices. In contrast to this, however, the development of commercial Press from the last decades of the nineteenth century gradually took the newspapers and magazines of the federal capital to incorporate, on their pages, practices and tastes of this wider audience. To discuss the meaning and consequences of this process, this article aims to discuss the polyphony and polysemy of commercial journalism by analyzing the coverage that these newspapers founded them in Rio de Janeiro gave to the leisure associations created by the local workers.
