The counterrevolutionaries of 1817 and their appropriations of history: “The dangers of Revolutions”

ABSTRACT

The subject of this article is the appropriations of the history made by those who were against the Pernambuco Revolution of 1817, at that time called “counterrevolutionaries” or “royalists”. Firstly, It examines the different notions of history and the historical experiences types used in Brazil and Portugal around 1817. In a second part, it analyzes the characters, facts, periods, etc. of the profane and sacred history appropriated by the counterrevolutionaries or realists in their reports about the Revolution of 1817. It identifies a language (concepts, analytical procedures and even principles) clearly inspired by the Enlightenment and, also, based on the defense of the Royal Bragança dinasty, using the ideas of fidelity to royalty and the vassal’s honor.
