Continuity or disconnection regarding the 68 Movement and the incubation period of the far-left armed violence in Italy

ABSTRACT

In this article, an analysis of the complex link between the 68 Movement and the armed struggle in Italy is carried out. To answer whether there was a clear link between the violence of the protest movements which arose in 1968 and the ensuing terrorist violence afterward, different theories have been examined by carrying out a comprehensive review of extensive literature. In order to understand the complexity of this goal, the analysis is widened to cover the previous and the following years, with special emphasis placed on workers’ protests in 1969 and the moment the Extra-parliamentary left organizations arose. The first months of 1970 are also considered as they correspond to the period when the first extreme left terrorist groups began to launch attacks.
