Without Argument: an almost fogotten intelectual project (Argumento Review, Brasil, 1973)

ABSTRACT

The ideas presented herein are part of the research project "The Pain of History (I) - Studies of History, Historiography and Literature: The Perplexity in Brazil during the years 1970". Based on the editorial of the Argument Review no. 1, São Paulo/Rio de Janeiro, Edition Paz e Terra, 1973, this article analyses the relationship between intellectuals and society in the cultural context, under the dictatorship period then underway. The objective is to clarify the possible meanings of the notion of "perplexity" mentioned in this source, besides its fundamental slogan: "Against fact, there is argument". The presence of intellectuals from other countries in the Consultive Council of the Review demonstrates the Review effort to obtain international support and consolidate the perspective then known as "latinoamericanism". The central hypothesis is that this Review can be seen as a privileged place for the registration, and the resulting historiographic reinterpretations, that the Latin American intellectual networks acted as a response to the social dynamic of perplexity by means of making available an opening to collective thinking and to the search of possible specific solutions to common problems, either in the theoretical level or in social practice.
