Interface: a project moving ahead

We begin 2013 by making a partial review of what we announced a year ago as the targets for this periodical for the two-year period 2012-2013.

The new website for Interface has now gone "live", at <www.interface.org.br>, and allows access to a facsimile version of each printed published issue, which can be browed on the screen and read on a tablet. Our web page is also integrated with the social networks (Facebook, Twitter e Blog), and this has been recently created in order to implement communication between the journal and its readers and collaborators. It is also possible to navigate through some sections of Interface (Dossier, Debates, Interviews and Creation) and to explore what has been published over these 16 years. The new design expresses the efforts of the editorial team of Interface, since its original project, to open up space for other forms of expression, with greater formal freedom for dialogue with the arts in a general manner.

Another change that has been implemented relates to our use, since the beginning of this year, of a new online editorial management system: ScholarOne, provided by Thomson Reuters through a partnership that was made available through the Brazilian SciELO Library, as part of this important efforts to qualify the editorial process of Brazilian journals. In this, manuscript submission and the procedures for assessing the scientific merit are much simpler. We expect to reduce the time required by our collaborators and to make the editors' online management speedier. Currently, one of the biggest challenges for editors of Brazilian scientific periodicals (after funding) is to be able to receive timely quality reports from their ad hoc reviewers. Through ScholarOne, the editors will have tools to look for reviewers from among active authors, a practice that is much used by international periodicals, as well as for producing reports in order to analyze the different stages of the process of assessing scientific merit. Use of the SciELO submission system for new submissions was terminated in November 2012 and will now only be used by this journal until all the processes in program have been concluded.

Lastly, but no less important, we have decided to terminate publication of Interface in its version printed on paper, starting with this issue. In its place, we are making the same version available in digital format, with the option of downloading it to be read on a tablet. This decision, which has emerged from internal debate and from recognition of the current trend for scientific periodicals to start using electronic versions, has the aim of reducing costs so that funds can be applied to another of our targets for this two-year period: expansion of the number of articles published in the English language. Through this, we hope to achieve greater international dissemination of what is published in Interface, thereby contributing towards the efforts of our scientific community to broaden the debate about our production.

With many changes announced for 2013, we invite our collaborators to participate in the thematic supplements that we are proposing: "Popular health education within the Brazilian National Health System" (in partnership with the Department of Strategic and Participative Management of the Ministry of Health, SGEP/MS) and "Institutional Support" (in partnership with the National Policy for Humanization of Care and Management within the Brazilian National Health System, of the Ministry of Health, PNH/MS). Submissions can be made up to April 30, 2013.
