This was a descriptive study with qualitative data analysis. Thirty-eight children from a public school in São Carlos, SP, Brazil participated. The results indicated that the children had knowledge, attitudes and myths regarding breastfeeding practice arising from observations of their families and closeness of living with them and people from their community. They were creative and responsible in proposing and preparing games, activities, anatomical models and music in order to promote breastfeeding within the school's community, thus encouraging children, teachers and school employees to participate in the activities. It was concluded that promotion of breastfeeding by children within elementary education contributes towards creating knowledge, positive attitudes and a culture favorable to the practice of breastfeeding.
