Abstract:
This work aims at analyzing the changing composition of agriculture in Midwest region of Brazil, specifically in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Goias, caused by the significant sugarcane expansion. The Shift-Share Model was used to calculate the scale and replacement of the main analyzed activities. The results show that the expansion changed the agricultural composition of the studied regions, contributed to the reduction of agricultural diversity and the reduction of food staple production areas.
