Among the various clinical conditions associated with an increased risk of developing pulmonary hypertension, systemic sclerosis merits special attention, not only because of the high prevalence of pulmonary hypertension among systemic sclerosis patients but also due to the significant role that pulmonary hypertension plays in worsening the prognosis of such patients. Therefore, periodic screening and the early initiation of treatment have a potential impact on the course of the disease, although this effect has yet to be well characterized.
