CONCEPTIONS OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ABOUT THE PRACTICE OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE IN INDIVIDUALS DEPRIVED OF LIBERTY

ABSTRACT

Introduction:

Health professionals present an incipient and limited conception about the practice of PE linked to health.

Objective:

The objective was to analyze the conceptions of health professionals about the practice of Physical Exercise (PE) in individuals deprived of liberty in a regional prison in the Bahian seminary.

Materials and Methods:

This is a qualitative field research, in the Regional Prison of the Semi-Arid region of Bahia, in 2019, with 28 health professionals. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used. Bardin's Thematic Categorical Analysis was performed.

Results:

Three categories were systematized: 1) Perception of health professionals about the importance of PE practice for individuals deprived of liberty; 2) Practice of PE in prison; 3) Mental disorders of greater incidence in prison and the treatments used. Most had the perception of PE linked to health; the reported exercises were playing ball and soccer, improvised bodybuilding, walking and sit-ups, all without professional guidance; it was recognized that PE can be an ally bringing benefits to the resocialization process, in reducing aggressiveness and recidivism. Physical Education was not a priority element in the prison unit.

Conclusion:

The regular practice of PE should belong to the intervention programs with prisoners and that these be guided.
