What follows is the beginning of the introduction to a selection of my papers, translated into Portuguese, supposedly representative of the "method" I have put to work in my publications. I there recount in detail two early episodes of the "story of my mind" (if I may use a Cartesian phrase), which strongly influenced my later works, prompting me to do my best to reconcile the respect for the "letter" with the concern with the "spirit", and the attention to evolutions with the analysis of structures.
