  • Free vibration analysis of orthtropic thin cylindrical shells with variable thickness by using spline functions

Ataabadi, Pouria Bahrami; Khedmati, Mohammad Reza; Ataabadi, Mostafa Bahrami

    Resumo em Inglês:

In this study, vibration behavior of orthotropic cylindrical shells with variable thickness is investigated. Based on linear shell theory and applying energy method and using spline functions, free vibration relations are derived for shell with variable thickness and curvature. Frequency parameter and mode shapes are found after solving the frequency Eigenvalue equation. Effects of variable thickness along axial and circumferential directions of the shell on its frequency parameter are studied and compared against each other. Shell thickness is assumed to be varied in a parabolic profile along both directions. Also, frequency parameters for both circular and parabolic curvatures along circumferential direction are investigated and results are compared together. In addition, effect of variable thickness on the mode shapes is studied.
  • Three dimensional vibration and bending analysis of carbon nanotubes embedded in elastic medium based on theory of elasticity

    Shaban, M.; Alibeigloo, A.

    Resumo em Inglês:

This paper studies free vibration and bending behavior of singlewalled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) embedded on elastic medium based on three-dimensional theory of elasticity. To accounting the size effect of carbon nanotubes, non-local theory is adopted to shell model. The nonlocal parameter is incorporated into all constitutive equations in three dimensions. The surrounding medium is modeled as two-parameter elastic foundation. By using Fourier series expansion in axial and circumferential direction, the set of coupled governing equations are reduced to the ordinary differential equations in thickness direction. Then, the state-space method as an efficient and accurate method is used to solve the resulting equations analytically. Comprehensive parametric studies are carried out to show the influences of the nonlocal parameter, radial and shear elastic stiffness, thickness-to-radius ratio and radiusto-length ratio.
  • Study of reflection and transmission of plane waves at thermoelastic-diffusive solid/liquid interface

    Sharma, J.N.; Kaur, R.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The paper concentrates on the study of reflection and transmission characteristics of waves at the interface of a thermoelastic-diffusive solid half-space underlying an inviscid liquid. The analytic expressions for amplitude ratios, reflection and transmission coefficients, in terms of incident angles and material parameters have been obtained for quasi-longitudinal (qP) and quasi-transverse (qSV) wave incidence. The normal and grazing incidence cases have also been derived and discussed. The total reflection phenomenon has also been discussed. The energy law has been shown to be obeyed by the incidence, reflected and transmitted waves by deriving energy equation and its simulation. The numerical computations of reflection and transmission coefficients have been carried out for copper material half-space in contact with water at the interface by using MATLAB software. The computer simulated results have been presented graphically in order to bring out clear comparison of various situations.
  • General exact harmonic analysis of in-plane timoshenko beam structures

    Dias, C. A. N.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The exact solution for the problem of damped, steady state response, of in-plane Timoshenko frames subjected to harmonically time varying external forces is here described. The solution is obtained by using the classical dynamic stiffness matrix (DSM), which is non-linear and transcendental in respect to the excitation frequency, and by performing the harmonic analysis using the Laplace transform. As an original contribution, the partial differential coupled governing equations, combining displacements and forces, are directly subjected to Laplace transforms, leading to the member DSM and to the equivalent load vector formulations. Additionally, the members may have rigid bodies attached at any of their ends where, optionally, internal forces can be released. The member matrices are then used to establish the global matrices that represent the dynamic equilibrium of the overall framed structure, preserving close similarity to the finite element method. Several application examples prove the certainty of the proposed method by comparing the model results with the ones available in the literature or with finite element analyses.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The post-buckling behavior of composite ships' stiffened plate panels has been studied. In this study, the average strain- average stress curves for these panels are derived using progressive failure method as well as nonlinear finite element method. The boundary conditions are appropriate for the continuous plate panels used in shipbuilding. The effects of the aspect ratio, initial geometrical imperfection and stiffener size on the post-buckling of these stiffened panels are evaluated
  • Thermoelastic slowness surfaces in anisotropic media with thermal relaxation

    Verma, K.L.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Analysis for general closed form solution of the thermoelastic waves in anisotropic heat conducting materials is obtained by using the solution technique for the biquadratic equation in the framework of the generalized theory of thermoelasticity. Obtained results are general in nature and can be applied to the materials of higher symmetry classes such as transvesely isotropic, cubic, and isotropic materials. Uncoupled and coupled thermoelasticity are the particular cases of the obtained results. Numerical computations are carried out on a fiber reinforced heat conducting composite plate modeled as a transversely isotropic media. The two dimensional slowness curves corresponding to different thermal relaxations are presented graphically and characteristics displayed are analyzed with thermal relaxations.

  • Strut and tie modeling for RC short beams with corroded stirrups

    El-Sayed, Ahmed K.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Corrosion of steel reinforcement is one of the major problems that shorten the service life of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Steel stirrups, due to their location as an outer reinforcement, are more susceptible to corrosion problems and damage. However, there is limited research work in the literature on the effects of stirrup corrosion on the shear strength of RC beams. This paper attempts to evaluate analytically the residual shear strength of RC short beams with corrosion-damaged stirrups. The shear strength of short or deep beams are generally determined using the strut and tie model. The corrosion effects were implemented in the model to make it capable of predicting the residual shear capacity of RC beams with corroded stirrups. The effect of corrosion is implemented considering the reduction in geometry of the concrete cross section due to spalling and reduction in effective compressive strength of concrete due to corrosion cracks. The proposed strut and tie model which accounts for the corrosion effects was verified using the experimental data available in the literature, and good agreement was found.
  • Study on the capacity of cold-formes steel built-up battened colums under axial compression

Anbarasu, Dr. M.; Kumar, P. Bharath; Sukumar, Dr. S.

    Resumo em Inglês:

This paper presents the theoretical and numerical investigation results of the pin ended cold-formed steel built-up battened columns under axial compression. The finite element model was developed using the finite element software ABAQUS. The comparison of finite element analysis results match with the test results available in the literature shows that the analysis model can simulate the buckling behaviour and ultimate capacity of cold-formed steel built-up columns. Three types of sections were selected based on the limitations provided in AISI S100-2007 for prequalified sections for single lipped channel. Spacing between the chords is chosen such that the moment of inertia about major axis equals the moment of inertia about minor axis. After the verification of the finite element model, parametric study has been carried out by varying the slenderness ratio and number of battens. Two types of analytical models were used to obtain the ultimate load by the direct strength method. The ultimate loads from FEA and DSM were compared. At the end, a design recommendation is proposed for DSM to evaluate ultimate strength of the lipped channel built-up battened columns.
  • Improved high order free vibration analysis of thick double curved sandwich panels with transversely flexible cores

Fard, K. Malekzadeh; Livani, M.; Ghasemi, Faramarz Ashenai

    Resumo em Inglês:

This paper dealt with free vibration analysis of thick double curved composite sandwich panels with simply supported or fully clamped boundary conditions based on a new improved higher order sandwich panel theory. The formulation used the first order shear deformation theory for composite face sheets and polynomial description for the displacement field in the core layer which was based on the displacement field of Frostig's second model. The fully dynamic effects of the core layer and face sheets were also considered in this study. Using the Hamilton's principle, the governing equations were derived. Moreover, effects of some important parameters like that of boundary conditions, thickness ratio of the core to panel, radii curvatures and composite lay-up sequences were investigated on free vibration response of the panel. The results were validated by those published in the literature and with the FE results obtained by ABAQUS software. It was shown that thicker panels with a thicker core provided greater resistance to resonant vibrations. Also, effect of increasing the core thickness in general was significant decreased fundamental natural frequency values.
