A central theme in Brazilian social thought is examined in a comparative analysis of three classic authors, through a comparison between three basic orientations regarding its several dimensions: "realism" (Sérgio Buarque de Holanda), "optimism" (Gilberto Freyre) and "pessimism" (Oliveira Vianna).
