SOCIAL SCIENCES AND EDUCATION: DURKHEIM’S AND FLORESTAN FERNANDES’ LESSONS

Abstract

The article discusses the relation between Social Sciences and Education taking as ideal-type guides two classics from Sociological traditions, a French and a Brazilian. Émile Durkheim and Florestan Fernandes are included for their emphasis on the consolidation of a Sociological matrix focusing on Education. Both their approaches, despite differing theoretical and political visions, consisted in committing Sociology to the essential questions posed by Education in certain historical contexts. This paper is a call for the importance of the encounter between Social Sciences and Education. The text opens the dossier Social Sciences and Education with articles by several experts interested in this discussion.
