The article presents the political thought of Father Antonio Vieira. Its premiss is that, above all, the Father's practice and writings strive for the interests of the Kingdom of Portugal. The article's intention is to show his conception of the State out of a Catholic understanding of the Reason of State. The author approaches the action and the discourse of Father Vieira, taking into account his Tridentine heritage, as well as the Portuguese context of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
