A civilizing project: Faoro revisited

Raymundo Faoro's interpretation of the formation of a ruling "bureaucratic status group" in Portugal and afterwards in Brazil is examined. Unlike his great contemporary Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, Faoro's conception is "civilizing", it is argued: it is more concerned with the search of the "Other" than with proposals that imply the approval of the origins.
