MODERNISM AS A CULTURAL MOVEMENT: A POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY OF CULTURE

Abstract

This paper proposes a new line of research on Brazilian modernism based on the work and activities of one of its main leaders, Mário de Andrade. More specifically, this study investigated and tested the possibilities and limits of the concept of modernism as a cultural movement. In short, this idea can be good not only to think about an agenda of cultural changes in society as proposed by Mario, but also to rethink his own work, his perception of changes and continuities in Brazilian society, as well as both the dissonant and critical meaning of his ideas regarding the hegemonic meaning taken by themes of national identity and Brazilian culture in the context of the 1920s-1940s.
