Resumo Apesar de sua grande amplitude e multiplicidade dos objetos que aborda, a obra de Touraine é conduzida por uma tese central: a tensão entre o ator social e o sistema. Esta ideia se espalhou por diversos temas: o trabalho, a sociedade pós-industrial, os movimentos sociais e a ideia de sujeito. Em todos os casos, Touraine opõe o sujeito, seus direitos e sua subjetividade às lógicas de dominação e do funcionamento da sociedade. Intelectual de esquerda, Touraine não é, no entanto, o intelectual orgânico dos partidos e movimentos sociais cujas lutas ele apoia, pois todo seu trabalho científico visa destacar o que opõe o trabalho do sujeito a ideologias constituídas.

Résumé Malgré son ampleur et la multitude des objets qu’elle aborde, l’œuvre de Touraine est conduite par une thèse centrale: la tension entre l’acteur social et le système. Cette idée s’est déployée sur plusieurs thèmes: le travail, la société post-industrielle, les mouvements sociaux et l’idée de sujet. Dans tous les cas, Touraine oppose le sujet, ses droits et sa subjectivité, aux logiques de la domination et du fonctionnement de la société. Intellectuel de gauche, Touraine n’est cependant pas l’intellectuel organique des partis et des mouvements sociaux dont il soutient les combats, car tout son travail scientifique vise à mettre en lumière ce qui oppose le travail du sujet aux idéologies constituées.

Abstract Despite its large scope and the multitude of objects it addresses, Touraine’s work is driven by a central thesis, i.e. the existing tension between the social actor and the system. He has developed this argument on several themes: work, post-industrial society, social movements and the idea of subject. In all cases, Touraine opposes the subject - its rights and its subjectivity - to the logics of domination and of the functioning of society. Being a left-wing intellectual, Touraine, however, is not an organic intellectual of the political parties and social movements that he supports. The whole of his scientific work aims at highlighting the opposition between the subject’s work and the established ideologies.

Resumo O presente artigo propõe uma leitura transversal da obra de Alain Touraine, baseando-se na problemática da história e sua importância em seu trabalho. De fato, poucos autores possuem a capacidade de Touraine de pensar no presente a partir de uma visão ampla da história, e é a história a que se referem suas principais categorias de análise (historicidade, tipos de sociedade). Distinguem-se três grandes momentos interpretativos em sua obra. Primeiro, o movimento trabalhador e a sociedade industrial. Segundo, os novos movimentos sociais e a sociedade programada. Terceiro, o sujeito e a nova modernidade. Em cada um desses, o artigo analisa as maneiras como a representação da história e o projeto de fazer história estruturam seu trabalho.

Resumen El presente artículo propondrá una lectura transversal de la obra de Alain Touraine tomando como eje la problemática de la historia y su importancia en su trabajo. En efecto, pocos autores poseen la capacidad que tiene Touraine de pensar el presente desde una visión amplia de la historia y es a la historia que remiten sus principales categorías de análisis (historicidad, tipos de sociedad). Se distinguen tres grandes momentos interpretativos en su obra. Primero, el movimiento obrero y la sociedad industrial. Segundo, los nuevos movimientos sociales y la sociedad programada. Tercero, el sujeto y la nueva modernidad. En cada uno de ellos, el artículo analiza las maneras como la representación de la historia y el proyecto de hacer la historia estructura su trabajo.

Abstract This article proposes a transversal reading of Touraine’s work, based on the problematic of history and its importance in his work. In fact, few authors have the Touraine’s ability to think about the present from a broad view of history, and it is to history that they refer their main categories of analysis (historicity, types of society). There are three major interpretive moments in his work. First, the workers’ movement and the industrial society. Second: the new social movements and the programmed society. Third: the subject and the new modernity. In each of them, this article analyzes the ways in which the representation of history and the project of making history a structure of their work.

Resumo Este artigo buscará problematizar a primeira fase da produção teórica de Alain Touraine, que estende-se do seu estudo sobre as fábricas Renault (1948) à publicação de Production de la Société (1973). Durante essa fase, o autor desenvolveu inúmeros e extensos programas de pesquisas empíricas sobre o mundo da indústria e do trabalho tendo como uma de suas preocupações centrais a problemática da consciência operária. Destacaremos a importância dessas pesquisas, pouco conhecidas pelo público acadêmico, assim como a relação que Touraine estabeleceu com a América Latina - em particular o Brasil e o Chile - na formação de sua teoria sociológica. Visa-se mostrar que a teoria que o autor produziu nessa fase buscou responder à necessidade de uma suposta modernização da sociedade ocidental, fosse ela o centro ou a periferia.

Abstract This article will seek to problematize the first phase of Alain Touraine’s theoretical production, from his study on the Renault factories (1948) to the publication of Production de la Société (1973). During this phase, the author developed numerous and extensive empirical research programs on the world of industry and work, and had the problem of worker consciousness as one of his central concerns. We will emphasize the importance of these studies, little known by the academic public, as well as the relationship that Touraine established with Latin America, in particular Brazil and Chile, in the formation of his sociological theory. We will try to show that the theory that the author produced in this phase sought to respond the need for a supposed modernization of Western society, whether the center or the periphery.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta uma parte dos diálogos de Alain Touraine com autores brasileiros. Concentro-me sobre a década de 1970, período em que o sociólogo francês orientou nove teses sobre o Brasil em universidades da região parisiense, todas dedicadas ao estudo de atores sociais no contexto de sociedades dependentes. Antes de analisar o conteúdo dessas pesquisas, apresento de forma breve alguns fundamentos da teoria social tourainiana, o contexto de seus primeiros contatos com a sociologia brasileira e os elementos que compõem o “modelo de desenvolvimento dependente”, que Touraine elaborou para pensar a América Latina. A seguir, discuto a presença deste modelo nas teses de seus orientandos e alguns limites dessa abordagem.

Abstract This article shows part of the dialogues of Alain Touraine with Brazilian authors. I focus on the 1970s, when the French sociologist supervised nine theses on Brazil in universities in the Paris region, all dedicated to the study of social actors in the context of dependent societies. Before analyzing the content of these researches, I briefly present some fundaments of Touraine’s social theory, the context of his early contacts with Brazilian sociology, and the elements that compose the “model of dependent development” that he elaborated to think of Latin America. Next, I discuss the presence of this model in the theses of its students and some limits of this approach.

Resumo Este artigo busca analisar contribuições de Alain Touraine para o debate amplo da democracia no contexto da modernidade radicalizada, marcada pela diversidade de movimentos sociais organizados em torno de questões identitárias. Considerando que a preocupação com a emancipação humana e com a democracia perpassa por toda a obra do autor, sua proposta de “cultura democrática”, centrada no “sujeito”, resulta de sua perspectiva em relação aos processos de modernização ocidental, que inclui seus estudos sobre América Latina e o conflito entre as duas faces opostas da modernidade - o mundo objetivo, instrumental, e o mundo subjetivo de conteúdos simbólicos. Centrado na chamada “terceira fase” do autor, o artigo busca mostrar contribuições e limites, dos dois conceitos destacados, para pensar a complexidade democrática dos dias atuais, passando pela trama existente entre a construção desses dois conceitos e as concepções do autor sobre as experiências democráticas sul-americanas.

Abstract This study analyzes the Alain Touraine’s contributions on the broad debate on democracy in the context of radicalized modernity, marked by the diversity of social movements related to identity issues. Considering that the concern about both the human emancipation and democracy pervades the whole work of the author, his proposal of “democratic culture”, centered on the “subject”, results from Touraine’s perspective on Western modernization processes, which includes his studies on Latin America and the conflict between the two opposing faces of modernity - the objective world (instrumental) and the subjective one of symbolic contents. Focused in the author’s third phase, this article seeks to show both the contributions and limits of the two mentioned concepts in order to reflect on the current democracy, addressing the connections between the construction of those two concepts and the author’s perspective on South American democratic experiences.

Resumo Este artigo discute as bases do acionalismo de Alain Touraine. Revisita o percurso teórico empreendido pelo autor, desde suas primeiras investigações sobre a consciência operária até um período mais recente, em que Touraine parece optar pelo abandono da sociologia em prol de uma ciência moral reinventada. Termina com uma interrogação sobre a pertinência e os limites de uma remobilização do aparelho sociológico tourainiano para analisar a segunda onda do movimento global. A partir da ideia de um conflito democrático que caracterizaria esse movimento, indica os aportes e os limites da sociologia tourainiana para responder a esse desafio.

Abstract This study discusses the theoretical grounds of Alain Touraine’s actionalism. It revisits the theoretical course taken by the author from his first researches on the worker’s consciousness in the 1950’s to a more recent period, when Touraine intends to abandon sociology and move to a reinvented moral science. The study ends with a question on the pertinence and the limits of a remobilization of Touraine’s sociological device to analyse the second wave of the global movement. From the idea of a democratic conflict that characterizes this movement, it indicates the contributions and limits of Touraine’s sociology to respond to this challenge.

Resumo Este texto apresenta ao leitor o conteúdo de duas entrevistas que Alain Touraine concedeu a Ricardo Festi e Flávio Mendes, em Paris, em 2017 e 2018. O sociólogo relembra sua trajetória no ambiente acadêmico francês, no qual ingressou na década de 1950, em meio às disputas em torno da refundação da disciplina no pós-guerra. Touraine também relata sua longa relação com a América Latina, região que desde suas passagens por Santiago e São Paulo - em 1956 e 1959, respectivamente - inspirou a elaboração de livros e artigos, todos com expressões de intensos diálogos teóricos e políticos. Por fim, o autor expõe sua opinião sobre temas contemporâneos, abordados em trabalhos mais recentes.

Abstract This text presents the content of two interviews given by Alain Touraine to Ricardo Festi and Flávio Mendes in Paris, in 2017 and 2018. The sociologist recalls his trajectory in the French academic environment, which he joined in the 1950s, in the midst of disputes over the re-foundation of the discipline in the post-war period. Touraine also recounts his long relationship with Latin America, a region that, since his travels to Santiago in 1956 and São Paulo in 1959, has inspired books and articles, all of them with expressions of intense theoretical and political dialogues. Finally, the gives his opinion about contemporary themes, addressed in more recent works.

Resumo As características que qualificam a identidade curda são reconhecidas entre seus membros há muito tempo, mas a capacidade de constituir grupos politicamente organizados entre essa população variou ao longo da história. Para compreender a complexidade da questão curda no Oriente Médio, é preciso analisar a forma pela qual eles se organizam politicamente, levando em consideração suas ideologias, particularidades do Estado em que se encontram, e, principalmente, as tensões políticas e disputas internas de seus movimentos. Além disso, é fundamental inserir a reivindicação de autonomia dos curdos no contexto da evolução da guerra civil na Síria de modo mais amplo, por ser esse um dos principais motivos do crescente envolvimento da Turquia e das grandes potências na região.

Abstract The characteristics that qualify the Kurdish identity have long been recognized among its members, but the ability to form politically organized groups among them has varied throughout history. In order to understand the complexity of the Kurdish question in the Middle East, it is necessary to analyze the way in which they organize themselves politically, taking into account their ideologies, particularities of the State in which they find themselves, and, most of all, the political tensions and internal disputes of their movements. In addition to that, it is essential to insert Kurds’ claim on autonomy in the context of the evolution of the civil war in Syria in a broader sense, as this is one of the main reasons for the growing involvement of Turkey and the great powers in the region.

Resumo Este artigo aborda as relações entre o marxismo de matriz comunista e o nacionalismo popular em dois contextos: o Brasil, entre as décadas de 1950 e 1960, e o Peru, entre 1920 e 1930. Parto da hipótese de que foram essas duas correntes ideológicas concorrentes que, no período que vai do final dos anos 1920 até a Revolução Cubana, plasmaram o universo ideológico das esquerdas latino-americanas. Procurarei demonstrar como a relação entre comunistas e nacionalistas seguiu padrões opostos nos dois casos: do conflito à aliança, no contexto brasileiro, e de uma origem comum ao antagonismo, no peruano. Explicarei esses padrões divergentes, tanto pelas diferenças entre os contextos nacionais, como pelo distinto contexto internacional, em particular no que se refere ao movimento comunista. Com essa pesquisa comparada, procuro submeter à crítica as formulações da chamada “teoria do populismo”, que procurou explicar a derrota da esquerda brasileira em 1964 pela convergência entre comunistas e nacionalistas.

Abstract This article addresses the relationship between communist-oriented marxism and popular nationalism in two contexts: Brazil, between the 1950s and the 1960s, and Peru, between the 1920s and the 1930s. I start from the hypothesis that this two concurrent ideological tendencies shaped the Latin American leftist immaginary, from the late 1920s to the Cuban Revolution. I shall demonstrate how the relationship between communists and nationalists followed opposite patherns in both cases: going from hostility to alliance in the Brazilian context, and evolving from a common origin to antagonism in Peru. I will explain this crossed paths appilling to both internal and external differences in conjunctures, especially concerning the communist movement. With this comparison, I seek to question the “theory of populism”, which sought to explain the defeat of Brazil’s left in 1964 because of the convergence between communists and nationalists.
