Abstract
Starting with a concise description of the Esau and Jacob manuscript, held at the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL), this article aims to present an interesting case that reveals one aspect regarding the manner in which this novel is composed. By reordering the pagination of the manuscript's folios we perceive that Machadian rewriting works by an expansion and/or a reorganization of anecdotes that compose the narrative as though they were moving pieces in the novel's puzzle.
