Abstract
In this paper, we aim at exploring the theme of the self-knowledge in the short story "The Mirror: A Sketch for a new theory of the human soul" by Machado de Assis, especially in the scope of the philosophical development found in the picture of Socrates that Plato prepares in the "Apology" and in his first dialogues, which lead us to the discussion of the correlated topic, that is, the meeting between master and disciple.
