Abstract

, in the novel Esaú e Jacó. Initially, we discuss the presence of allegorical mentions and the Machado's method used in the plot. Then, we analyze a note that was published in the newspaper, as a possible source for the "tablet episode", from the novel. At the end, we consider the position of counselor Marcondes Aires in face of the republican coup of 1889, in contrast to Custódio alienation regarding the new political regime.
