Tragic hermeneutics in Machado de Assis: redescription as a dimension of unlearning

Abstract

This study seeks to reflect upon some implications of Machado's philosophy for education, specifically with regard to the hermeneutic-tragic aspect of the first object in relation to the dimension of unlearning of the second. Three short stories by Machado de Assis were selected for this purpose: "Cantiga de esponsais," "Um homem célebre” and “Teoria do Medalhão. They will be analyzed from the perspective of "tragic hermeneutics”. Then I discuss this aspect of Machado’s philosophy in the scope of education, especially as it regards the dimension of unlearning.
