Questionning the production of space

Abstract

In addition to the study of the Afro-Brazilian family, Louis Marcelin’s work contains original reflections on the production of space among the urban peripheries. It shows how inhabited space reproduces racial hierarchies and how houses join bodies and territories. However, Marcelin did little to analyze the exact status of space in the configurations of houses themselves. This article addresses this issue through the distinction between “quasi-configurations of houses” and “configurations of houses”: while the former depend only on the ego from whom we observe flows of things and people, the second refer to a mutual experience of space.
