Hyperbilirubinemia in patients with imbalanced chronic Chagas's cardiomyopathy

A histopathological study of the liver in 20 autopsy cases of chronica decompensated Chagas' heart disease, 10 of them with jaundice and hyperbilirrubinemia, and 10 without jaundice, revealed that: quantitative rather than qualitative differences were found between the groups with and without jaudice. The most prominent lesion in the icteric group was congestive centrolobular necrosis. Hemorrhagic pulmonary infarcts were similarly present in both groups, and did not seem to play a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of jaundice.
