EDITORIAL

Materials Research - Ibero-american Journal of Materials

Judicious, fair and educative!

This 43th issue of Materials Research contains 22 original articles. About 90 articles are under review at present. Mat Res. is also published in electronic format at Scielo - (www.scielo.br/mr).

The rejected/accepted ratio fluctuates at around 40%; and the time for publication varies from 2 to 12 months depending on how many times an article diffuses through the following loop: editorial office-editor-reviewers-editor-authors-editor-reviewers ... The rate limiting step is typically the reviewers-editor-authors-editor branch of the loop. And a good question is: how do archival journals manage to analyze articles within one or two months of submission? This editor thinks he knows the answer, but he will leave it open to stimulate further thinking from authors and reviewers...

It is appropriate to note the relevant fact that several highly ranked materials related international conferences were or will be held in Brazil in the period 2007 - 2009. Just to name a few: 23rd Annual Meeting of the Polymer Processing Society 2007, International Symposium of Ceramics in Medicine - Bioceramics 21, 2008, Ferroelectrics 2008, XII International conference on the Physics of Non-crystalline Solids 2009, XV International Conference on Sol-Gel 2009, 9th International Symposium on Glass Crystallization 2009, UNITECR 2009, and XI International Conference on Advanced Materials 2009. This is a clear indication that more and more Brazilian research groups are being recognized by the international materials community. As a bonus, these conferences allow a large number of Brazilian (and other South American) researchers and students to meet face-to-face with renowned scientists from several countries and to be aware of the most recent findings, as well as of the state-of-art in relevant topics.

Materials Research is indexed by the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE), which includes the Web of Science, ISI Alerting Service and Materials Science Citation Index (MSCI), Chemical Abstracts, World Ceramic Abstracts, International Pool of Glass Abstracts, and Scopus.

We gratefully acknowledge the Brazilian funding agencies CAPES and CNPq for covering most of the editorial and printing costs of this issue of Mat. Res. The financial support from the Department of Materials Engineering, Federal University of São Carlos (DEMa/UFSCar) for mailing expenses; the Vitreous Materials Laboratory (LaMaV/UFSCar) for fax and telephone expenses are also acknowledged. Associação Brasileira de Metalurgia e Materiais (ABM) and Associação Brasileira de Polímeros (ABPol) cover the editorial assistant's salary. Associação Brasileira de Cerâmica - ABC, ABPol, and ABM have also helped advertising Materials Research and managing its subscriptions and financial resources.
